What is reading?

I researched the origins and current state of reading. To communicate this to an audience of designers, I wrote a short informal story. Using markers, I drew illustrations to bring visual cohesion to depictions of various artifacts and to save time in production in After Effects. Seemingly dull data is converted to information through the use of story and pattern.

After completing research on this topic, our teacher asked that we try to explain everything in two minutes to a small group of fellow classmates. I drew as I spoke about the evolution of reading. Afterwards, they told me record what I had just done.

I wrote out my impromptu speech and drew storyboards to begin the visualization process.

This screenshot of aftereffects shows only 20 of around 500 layers that came together in the creation of the video. The stacked rainbow portion on the composition board is the tiny figures that compose the family tree.
